What happened to my self-amalgamating tape?

Due to a forecast for high winds I brought my antennas down into the garden. I was a bit disturbed to see what had happened to the self amalgamating tape which was supposed to be wrapping the connections to my 23 cm amp.

This has happened before and it seems to be caused by the box being sealed with silicone sealer. I have heard stories in the past that the silicone can migrate and I think that this is what is happening here.

When I re-taped the connectors last time, I was very careful to try to clean the outside of the box with TF90 solvent spray, but this doesn't seem to have worked.

This time, I'm going to try wrapping the connectors with cling film and then self amalgamating tape. See if it makes any difference.

If anyone has a solution, I would really like to hear it. You can email me on g8fwy@steamrail.co.uk

Thanks for looking.

Well, 6 months later and its happened again. The cling film clearly didn't work.

But why is it only the RF connector covering which has failed?

As I've had my sa tape for quite a long while and I've no idea what type / manufacture it is (I got it at a ham radio rally years ago) I've decided to buy a new roll. I'll strip the old stuff and re-do when the new stuff arrives.
